Often this time of the year, I tend to feel a little down and uninspired. At least, here in Scandinavia the winter days are short, dark and cold, which affects my overall mood. Everything feels a little grey and crave for something to keep me on top. Rather than being reactive to the circumstances, we need to take control of our own lives and emotions. Here are my tips and tricks to define your own happiness.
Be grateful for what you have
I am a strong believer of that gratitude is the key to happiness. In todays fast-paced life, we tend to focus on what’s next on the expense of recognising all the beautiful things we already have. Researchs have shown that the powerful emotion of gratitude an heighten happiness as well as productivity and health. Gratitude is the acknowledgment of goodness in one’s life. How can you acknowledge gratitude?
Keep a gratitude journal
Prayers of gratitude
Remember the challenging things you have gone through
Say “I love you” more
I have talked about this before, but you should not wait ’til tomorrow for the things you can do today. Embrace the now and do not let moments pass. Nothing in life is permanent. Appreciate what you have and take action on the things that will take you closer to the life you want to live.
Let go of the thought of perfection
This is something I struggle with every day. I wait until things are “perfect”, when the matter of facts is that things are never going to be perfect. When we quit worrying about specific results, we are actually able to perform better. This fear of not being perfect enough, has prevented me of doing many things that I have wanted to do. I realise how sad this sounds, so nowadays I am determined to do more things that scare me. If you never try, you will never know. Step out of your comfort zone. Challenge yourself and you will grow.
Being happier and defining your own success starts with your mindset. To make your dreams come true you have to focus on yourself. We are often our own worst critics. Instead celebrate where you are and be proud of yourself. You are doing great!
